Nelu Lazar’s work is spread across several domains. He is an engineering lead in automotive technology industry by day, and also a technology evangelist, community projects activist, software developer, entrepreneur, technology consultant.
He was first introduced to electronics, robotics and mechanical engineering concepts in late ‘80s, and then to software development and computer engineering in 1991. Nelu earned a BS/MS in Electrical Engineering from the department of EE and Computer Science of Transilvania University in Brasov, Romania.
Broad research interests include Software Engineering and Product Development, Product Management, Startups and Entrepreneurship, Aspects of Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, 6 Sigma Framework, Project/Program Management, Business Development, Education Frameworks.
In professional engineering, Nelu led electrical and mechanical programs and teams, for projects related to designing and manufacturing of various components and systems for automotive, heavy machinery, marine, industrial and electric power industries. From part design to systems engineering, Nelu offered his insights to talented teams of engineers from multiple locations in the world.
Nelu founded Lafayettech in 2008 as an educational platform for local businesses and startups in Greater Lafayette to integrate new technology, and also as a way to interconnect and mix local businesses with emerging startups, with students and with local talent in a co-working environment. Nelu founded Lafayette, Indiana’s first brick & mortar Tech HUB in 2011 that offered co-working activities and that was the driver for additional amazing local efforts for economic and technology development in the area. The Tech HUB was the outcome of years of planning together with a handful of other important local leaders and co-working supporters.
Nelu led past editions of local Startup Weekend, and initiated large tech conferences in Greater Lafayette by leading Lafayette Digital Media Conference, Lafayette Facebook Conference, and a series of Startup Showcase events highlighting successful local tech companies.
Focused on the education reform trends as well, Nelu extended Lafayettech’s model to K-12, by founding K12TECH – the connector for collaborative K12 programs and classroom technologies. Designed for local K12 teachers, educators, technology instructors, school administrators, and parents, K12TECH monthly meetup gives K-12 community the chance of sharing and better understanding the state of technology usage and innovation in local K-12 schools and beyond. The program is bound to being picked up by more and more K-12 communities globally.
TED is amazing. And Nelu built up an organizational team to bring TEDx to Lafayette. First edition of TEDxLafayette is set for late 2014.
Whenever he had a chance over the years, Nelu shaped Nehloo Interactive as a software research company, and launched several new software products and brands from scratch and led their product management process from concept idea to development and market launch. Under Nehloo Interactive, Nelu also consulted startups and businesses on product management, technology integration and business development, and worked on developing their custom software apps. On Romanian Internet market, Nelu may be known as the founder of Goovel, uiteceVreau, uiteceBlog, BestofRomania, Motoguru, FloaredeColt.org, Tweetvisor, Jooveler, Doocide, and YoouKids.
Nelu is married with Gena, and they have two children, Ada and Ed. They originate from Romania, and currently live in Lafayette, Indiana.
